Anyone seen this problem on OpenBSD with KDE before? Plasmashell crashes and just leaves a black desktop. Can start apps (like konsole via Ctrl+Alt+t).

@gregsie I'm out of time to work this today but I'm stuck with the startplasma-x11 stdout/error showing:

QProcess: Cannot create pipe (Too many open files)

Everything falls to crap in the log after this wrt "Failed to register with host portal" -> "Could not register app ID: App info not found" type errors which is either a red herring or useful.

I've got the base config for open files in login.conf and sysctl.conf set to ridiculously large numbers so I don't think it is a ulimit type thing? Or I'm missing something elsewhere.

Maybe turning away from it for a while will help.

@RootMoose Have not seen it on BSD, but it has happened with me on Debian 14 Forky which I daily drive with. Have not bothered to figure out why, but/and have to reboot quite a bit when coming back after this one workstation at work goes to sleep. The dock vanishes and you are left with whatever windows were left open when it went to sleep / locked screen. I assumed it was a testing/forky bug.

Wild guess, but maybe try the default partition layout? Iirc /usr/local is mounted wxallowed by default while / is certainly not.

@FritzAdalis Good call out - I'll give it a try.

@RootMoose Last year I was using KDE on Alpine and frequently when trying to close smaller pop-up windows the whole shell would crash into a no-shell black screen. Earlier this year, the crash would still happen, but most of the shell, sans wallpaper like in your case, would respawn. So KDE have actually improved in this department.

When I switched to OpenBSD this year, I told to myself: KDE? Likely never again. Likely still too unstable.

@fionescu I did have it working on 7.9 about six months. This was in a VM though so never really got properly exercised.

Re: Alpine and KDE - that's my daily on multiple machines for the last ~6 months and have never had any problems, at least not with the RX6600. the RX7800 is unstable as of kernel 7.1. Haven't found the time to try 7.2 yet.

@RootMoose same problem when I tried updating to 6.8 on Artix. No idea why as I was already using Wayland on 6.7. Gave up and reverted.

@NobodyElse47263 Yeah, it's weird and "smells like" something just not right. In the OpenBSD case this is 6.7.[5?] I think so not a 6.8-ism. I've tried everything that has been mentioned in this thread without luck. Giving up for now, will revisit at some point in the coming weeks when I have time/interest to spend on this again.

@RootMoose do you use sddm? I switched from artix to endeavouros and as far as I can tell that might be the only substantive change and KDE instantly worked with no blackscreen issues and I think the only change is going from sddm as default to plasma-login. (Also open-rc to systemd but I don't think open-rc was the issue)

@NobodyElse47263 For OpenBSD I was using xenodm. Afaik sddm doesn't exist under OpenBSD. Plasma-login and it's systemd dependency are definitely not available under OpenBSD. Ha.

I haven't put any focus into this lately (squirrel!) but maybe will turn attempts back to it at some point. My dailies are Alpine Edge + Openrc + sddm + Wayland + Plasma 6.8 and it just works without drama.

With the state of Wayland on OpenBSD and Plasma 6.8 going Wayland only I'm probably better served to look at some other desktop or WM - at least for now. OpenBSD has Plasma 6.7.5 iirc.

@RootMoose ah interesting. Sorry I don't actually know anything about the specifics of BSD, just thought it odd we seemed to have the same problem at the same time. I'm glad we now both have systems that work in any case.

(Just to add. Not a criticism of artix, 100% skill issue on my part I'm sure)

qt problem?

another shot in the blue iirc, tmp gets wiped on reboot on 8.0 and /tmp/user/uid can't be recreated due to chsnged file attributes.. At work atm. I think it's a two liner with an environments variable in my xsession to divert it to something in my home dir.

@tionisla @NobodyElse47263 Yep, I had it writing into ~/.tmp and that seemed to work ok clearing errors but still no joy getting plasmashell working.

There were some other errors related to auth but it was a week ago so don't remember the details. It's fine, I'll probably do something else like lxqt or something once I turn attention back to it.
