I'm using xfce from ages (reminds me the early times of Win95 and Amiga), but I looking back to LXDE from a while that I used sometimes in the past. Pretty nice that it haven't changed at all in ages, and remains the most reactive than everything else. :P
But I think I should pick back Compiz-Fusion and look to customize it, most of the FOSS applications comes with their interface that talking of integration, in these system, is a bit far fetch.
@clf LXQT is the fork with the QT libraries. LXDE is more or less frozen, but you could pick it for a really low spec system if you don't want spend time to set up a window manager + extras.
LXQT is a bit more flexible between the two, seems support better multiple window-manager like compiz at starts with less issues than LXDE. Compiz under lxde seems gives me some glitches with the modern graphic drivers/videoservers.
