Yesterday I posted the same post about my new film to both Mastodon and Threads.
On Mastodon, my post was boosted 105 times and had a flurry of activity. On Threads: 1 boost.
Because on Threads, if you mention something on the competitive platform YouTube, the Threads algorithm kills your content.
Choose the honest social medium. Choose Mastodon.
@randahl I was actually just thinking about this as I am getting ready to start a social media account for a band I am involved with. I would prefer to use the fediverse and realized that threads technically uses Activity Pub protocol. I considered using that but I don't trust Meta.
I'll probably use Mastodon and just find a way to automate my posts to other accounts.
@gailen that is what I do — Mastodon is my primary medium, and then I just mirror some of my posts to the commercial platforms.
I hope one day Mastodon grows so much, I can just disregard every Meta platform out there.

Depending on what functionality you need, I'd suggest to get some information about other fediverse-(activityPub)-software, like Sharkey, Friendica, littleFedi, as they offer much more than Mastodon.
