I've given up on #OpenBSD already. Simple install, X works with #twm and #xfce but is a bitch with #plasma . No configurations work even with the kde-plasma hints for .xinitrc and .xsession. Just a grey launch screen with a mouse pointer in middle of the screen. This is in version 7.9 and also 8.0
ulimits, kernel file handlers, locale changes made. nothing works.
Has anyone a working .xinitrc file?
Works perfectly on #FreeBSD 15.1
@gregsie i got it to work with enabling the dbus service and following .xsession:
export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/run/$(id -u)
if [ ! -d $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR ]; then
mkdir -m 700 -p $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR
fi
export QT_FORCE_STDERR_LOGGING=1
export XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE
export DESKTOP_SESSION=plasma
/usr/local/bin/startplasma-x11 > ~/.startplasma-x11.log 2>&1
you also need to increase some params for open files: https://www.coreystephan.com/openbsd-thinkpad/#performance (nice article in general with a lot of hints for desktop usage of openbsd)
@gregsie
You may have found them already, but if not check the docs in /usr/local/share/doc/pkg-readme (I think).
@FritzAdalis Thanks. i did this to generate the recommended .xinitrc file for plasma. it didn't work.on version 7.9 or 8.0. theres no difference with .xsession launching through xenodm either.
messagebus seems to be the standard daemon but dbus is still in use by plasma. file and kernel limits are all raised too
.
I've done a complete reinstall, checked my signature file ISO and still no plasma joy.
It really shouldn't be this hard! xfce works just fine so my xorg is all good.
@kielkontrovers I managed a successful installation of XFCE4 without any config changes at all and TWM worked straight from the installer with not a single file being changed.
Plasma is driving me nuts!
@gregsie I installed today (8.0). I had to do a sysupgrade -s in order to fix pkg_add can't resolve errors during installing kde.
I also adjusted the .xsession file to create the tmp files outside of /tmp/run [ export XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=~/.tmp/run/$(id -u) ]
Now I can login but plasmashell is in a crash loop - working it now. Ctrl+Alt+T opens konsole so that's something, most of the way there I guess.
@gregsie I'm out of time to work this today but I'm stuck with the startplasma-x11 stdout/error showing:
QProcess: Cannot create pipe (Too many open files)
Everything falls to crap in the log after this wrt "Failed to register with host portal" -> "Could not register app ID: App info not found" type errors which is either a red herring or useful.
I've got the base config for open files in login.conf and sysctl.conf set to ridiculously large numbers so I don't think it is a ulimit type thing? Or I'm missing something elsewhere.
Maybe turning away from it for a while will help.
@RootMoose I am making some progress with this. Using a terminal I can see that xrandr shows the output is connected but kscreen doctor says it is disabled. I have enabled the output and after 20sec I get a bigger screen. Running plasmashell -replace gives me a full plasma desktop. And it works..just need to find out how to make it permanent.. as it doesn't survive a reboot put process works again. Might tinker with xint. Will post a fuller post later
@gregsie @FritzAdalis Sounds promising!
I'm going to spin up a totally vanilla VM and see what happens.
I probably won't be able to give any deep attention to this till this evening at the earliest (work is a shit show and have a concrete pour for the garden folly in the late afternoon).
Re: QEMU, video is virtio. I think it's what defaults under Alpine, at least I didn't set up anything custom using virt-machine-manager..
@gregsie @FritzAdalis Did a vanilla install with auto fs layout (took 3 attempts - /usr/local needs to be 12+GB to accommodate `pkg_add kde kde-plasma`!)
Still no joy. The errors that remain seem to be related to auth/polkit stuff. That and the kde specific app id unknown/missing errors which _might_ be related to same.
Maybe I'll investigate further tomorrow. Bordering on tiresome now. Ha.
This is now resolved, I have written a quick blog post with the outcome. I hope this helps. Drop me a message if I can help further. Thanks everyone who has contributed.
@gregsie Does the pkg-readme file installed by the kde-plasma package need an update? Usually all required info should be in there.
