"Globally, people speak roughly 7,000 languages. But until recently, most automatic speech recognition (ASR) services with high-quality transcription only worked for a small number of them. Meta’s groundbreaking Omnilingual ASR is a major step in creating a universal transcription service. Using a suite of open-source models, it offers speech recognition for 1,600 languages, including 500 that can’t currently be transcribed by other AIs. Paired with Meta's new Omnilingual Machine Translation system, those transcripts can then be translated across more than 1,600 languages, too. “We’re very passionate about making sure technology supports as many languages as possible,” says Jean Maillard, a lead researcher on the project. Already, Nigerian health practitioners are using Omnilingual ASR to improve patient care in community clinics."
