I will never recommend Tutanota after my free account was deleted for inactivity. Like... isnt that a good thing for a free account? The worst part is I had used it to sign up to stuff, thinking it was a suitable platform, and then I got rug-pulled. Also their client was super slow and laggy and unreliable... one would assume they're better now, but I will never know.
So now I pay for Migadu. I could have paid for Tutanota, but they will never get my money after that.

Last time I checked 5+ years ago (when they had the name Tutanota), they forced their users to pay $12 every year in order to have an account there. Good that they have changed that rule.

I checked my Keepass and there are 16 entries tied to an email address they shut down, created 2018 to 2019. Presumably they sent notice to that email, which I checked sporadically because it was only used for things i had signed up to, and because their app was a laggy dumpsterfire at that time so I only used web as required.
Thankfully this pushed me to find Migadu at that time and they have been amazing since. I'm sure Tutanota is great for many folks now, but once burned... never twice.

Yepp, I remember Tuta's laggy UI when I tried it so many years ago 
Didn't use their app, though, only the web interface. And I also remember their obsession of using round circles everywhere! Literally everywhere! They maybe do use them still today. I don't know.

Is Migadu self-hostable?
I use Posteo which have some similarities to Tuta:
- both are from Germany,
- both encrypts your email, but Tuta offers end-to-end encryption if both you and the reciever uses Tuta,
- both uses the 12€ per year pricing... well, no, not these days now when I checked. Tuta have increased their pricing from 1€ per month to 3€ per month, if you choose the annualy plan.
Why I did choose Posteo over Tuta (if you want to know):
- Posteo can encrypt everything that you "throw" at them (even the metadata), no matter from who you get email from,
- Posteo offers SMTP/IMAP,
- Posteo are cheaper these days (apparently),
- Posteo offers anonymous signup and payment.
@airikr@mst-gts.airikr.me yeah imap so my usual clients were a must for me, over encryption even. Nothing sent to me is encrypted (I gave up posting my pgp key anywhere) and no one I send emails to has one either.
My wife works in law, and it blows my mind that email is still used unencrypted for these things. Worse, a place she worked at had (before she worked there) had a mishap with a malicious third party intercepting a clients email correspondence.
