Something I love about the Fediverse:

In a world where people are nudged and conditioned to passively, unreflectively consume, I love that so many Fedi folk share what they are thinking, learning, doing and making.

It truly feeds my heart.

@ShaulaEvans@zirk.us I agree, and have moved that spirit into irl situations. I will interrupt someone that tries to tell me what their job is in an introduction. I always tell them that I don't care how they sell their body, I want to know what they do and what they think. Then I give examples like crochet and are aliens real.

@fiend_unpleasant @ShaulaEvans When I meet someone my favourite question to ask is 'Who are you?' People will repeat their name, talk about their study or work, that they're the partner or parent of someone, mention the shared connection we might have or other relatively random stuff. None of that answers the question though and when I point that out it really stops people in their tracks.

In a sense it's very confrontational in a polite way but I'm always surprised how few people actually thought about that.

I did, and do, think about it a lot but if I'm honest I find it difficult to answer that question myself. I do know the answer keeps changing.

@thisislieven @ShaulaEvans @fiend_unpleasant I find the question "who are you" rather aggressive. It sets up an undefined expectation, & I suspect the boring answers are just an armor to deflect it.

What is it the asker really wants to know or create? What kind of interactions might one elicit with a different question?

▪ what do you do for fun?
▪ what do your friends say is great about you?
▪ what would you do, even if no one paid you to do it?
▪ what do you want to make happen in the world?
