@glyph@mastodon.social Very, very disappointing. I've had an account for many years but decided not to renew this time around (for a few reasons). I still have 6 months to find a replacement.

@glyph @mttaggart Damn, gotta get me and my eldest kid off it ASAP.

Glyph
@glyph @mastodon.social

@simeon @mttaggart no ethical consumption and all that but if you could mention that this is the reason for your cancellation when you do cancel, that would be good.

@glyph holy fuck that‘s sad. 1Password is the most polished one

@semanticist @mastodon.social

@glyph I still use them solely due to inertia, they burned a lot of people by requiring paid subscriptions when they'd previously been a non-SaaS product, and doing their best to force people to update to the SaaS-only versions

@glyph FFS. Why do all these companies want to endorse this guy so bad?

the tech industry fervor over Omarchy is so fucking confusing to me that i'm honestly starting to wonder if it's just money laundering. over TWELVE MILLION DOLLARS for a fascist's dotfiles and bash scripts is patently insane

@glyph I have a yearly payment coming up, and I do NOT have the mental capacity to spend on changing my family over to something else, but now I have to. Fuck ’em all.

Glyph
@glyph @mastodon.social

@mikaeleiman you really don't; this is not an obligation to boycott. I'm not sure I'm going to; for example, for myself, would moving to Apple Passwords, enthusiastic partner of NewsCorp via Apple News, be an upgrade in terms of business ethics? there are higher priority things in the world.

but if you DO cancel, be sure to let them know why.

@glyph I've been meaning to switch since they dumped their native client for webwraps, so it just adds one more reason to the pile. And they raised the price 50% since last year.

@glyph ill have to look up everything in that post because none of those people or companies means anything to me except 1Password.

Glyph
@glyph @mastodon.social

@eviljarred sorry to be the one introducing you to The Discourse but Omarchy is a very stupid Linux distribution by DHH, and DHH is this guy jakelazaroff.com/words/dhh-is-

@glyph WOW WTF @1password ?!

I really need to finally switch away from 1Password… Reasons keep adding up.

@glyph @eviljarred Not to mention that the right wing nasty "Tommy Robinson" sounds like a man of the people, someone you'd meet in the pub... But his real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon. I wonder why he doesn't go by his real name?!!

@glyph from the moment they killed off the buy-once option in favour of being an entirely rentware product, I’ve stopped recommending them

downside is I also dunno really want to recommend atm :| everything I’ve reviewed (and this includes reading cure53 reports, checking codebases and builds, etc) has not left me very happy with where the options are

@AAMfP @bitwarden @glyph reading their cure53 analyses is a cringe-inducing ode to Velocity Development methodology, showing a disregard to care

(part of this is due to typescript’s ecosystem being a piece of shit, but only part of it)

don’t get me wrong, Bitwarden with Vaultwarden is one of the contenders in the running, but everything I’ve seen has made me “I’d need to defend against this, a lot” anxious. which is why I haven’t made the call.

🙁 are there proper (online) password managers, then?
I'm currently on good ol' KeePass on desktop PC and KeePassDX on mobile, sharing DB file either through CryptPad (if in a hurry) or Koofr online storage through rclone.

@glyph the crypto stuff gave me enough of the ick that I bit the bullet and moved to self hosted Vaultwarden. Every time I've seen 1Password in the news since then, that move has been justified.

KungFuDiscoMonkey
@kfdm @social.tsun.co

@glyph A password manager is *just* (1) a bunch of rows in a table, making me naively want to believe it should be easier to replace, but knowing the mobile OS integrations and browser integrations are a moving target of non-trivial platform work makes me sad knowing it will be hard to find something that is quite as polished. 😵

It continues to sadden me that "don't fund visibly terrible people" seems to be a hurdle too tall for many 😢

1) used in jest. Security and syncing is **hard** too

@glyph I am so glad I switched away from them when they did the SaaS bait-and-switch move back in the day. That already made me question them as a company and it turns out that was correct.
