I thought Nostr seemed like a cool idea. Created a Nostr identity, started checking things out.
Appears to be the place for cryptobros, flat earthers, and incel neo-nazis to hang out and trade cryptocurrency 😳
Am I wrong about that? Is there some pleasant side to Nostr that I'm not seeing? A nice little corner for anarchists and people who enjoy reading and writing smut?
Maybe I'm being unfair; after all, it's taken me years of hopping around the Fediverse to find my people. Perhaps I shouldn't be so quick to judge Nostr—but, gods, it's difficult not to be icked out by all the Bitcoin and AI hype that seems to be the mainstream topics there.
@epn4littlefedi it's a shame, because the protocol is pretty cool. I like that events are defined as specific NIP types, and a signed NIP from anywhere shows up everywhere that type of NIP is supported.
The coolest thing I've found so far is shared highlights and annotations: Read a news article or blog post, highlight a passage and write a little note about it, and that highlight + annotation is shared across the network. No need to compose a separate post with quote formatting and a link to the article.
Alas, nearly everything I see there that isn't something I posted has to do with crypto mining and Pepe the motherfucking Frog 😒
A crypto-fascist's fever dream.
