When you install a new LittleFedi instance with pretty much default settings, what is the max character limit per post? Can you change it before or after installing?

"When we talk about time, we usually refer to the past as being behind us and the future being ahead of us.

"This space-time arrangement seems so totally natural to us, it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to think otherwise.

"Years ago, I read about the Aymara, a tribe of Indigenous people in South America who have a way of thinking about time that’s the complete reverse of our own.

"They refer to the future as “back” or “behind” time, and the past as “front” time.

"When they speak about the past, they gesture ahead of them, and when they speak about the future, they gesture behind them.

"The reason they point ahead when talking about the past is that the past is known—it has already happened, therefore, it’s in front of you, where you can see it.

"The future, on the other hand, is unknown—it hasn’t happened yet, so it’s behind you, where you can’t see it.

"I read about this almost fifteen years ago and it still blows my mind.

"The past is in front of us. The future is behind us."

fasnix - archiviert @fasnix@fe.disroot.org

"(...) In my opinion the web is better when it is safer, faster and more open to anyone to enjoy its content.

However, the web is getting worse because it is getting more and more unsafe (from a privacy perspective) with real consequences (even imprisonment). The web is getting worse because it is just as fast as it was 10 years ago, while internet speeds have increased dramatically. This is detrimental for poor countries and poor people and increases inequality. The web is getting worse because it is less open every day. It is becoming more and more a set of content silos that allow censorship and bubbles to form, blocking of ‘other’ views, thus making the web less open and empowering extremism. (...)"

This is a colour wildlife photo in landscape format of an adult Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarcticus) waddling on a pack of snow down to the sea. Graham Land, Antarctica (2024).

To the right of centre is our chinstrap penguin and with the bed of well trodden (by penguins) snow covering the entire photo. The penguin is viewed obliquely with the front and right side in view, the camera about half a metre above the snow and two metre from the bird (actually much further but using a long lens and a cropped image). The bird is filling three-quarters of the height of the photo, half the width and is walking (waddling) from right to left and towards the camera. Our penguin has a black back extending upwards to form a cap on top of the head finishing over the eyes and at the top of the short, black beak. A thin black line runs from the back of the neck, under the eyes and beak and up the far side: hence the name. It's wings (flippers) are spread outwards to aid balance. The wings have a thin black line stretching along the leading edges while the undersides are white. The birds front is all white though with a few small orange 'penguin poo' stains scattered around, personal hygiene isn't a penguin thing. The two large pink feet are half buried in the deep snow.

"The WebAIM MillionThe 2026 report on the accessibility of the top 1,000,000 home pages

Introduction:
For the eighth consecutive year, WebAIM conducted an accessibility evaluation of the home pages for the top 1,000,000 web sites. The evaluation was conducted using the WAVE stand-alone API (with additional tools to collect site technology and category data). The results provide an overview of and insight into the current state of web accessibility for individuals with disabilities as well as trends over time.
(...)
Conclusion:
The 2026 WebAIM Million analysis found notable increases in both the number of detected accessibility errors and number of pages with WCAG conformance failures, reversing a trend of gradual accessibility improvements in recent years. A primary concern is the significant increase in home page complexity and ARIA code—both of which correlate to increased detectable errors.

These trends likely reflect broader shifts in web development including increased reliance on 3rd party frameworks and libraries and automated or AI-assisted coding practices (“vibe coding”). Home pages are getting larger and more technologically complex at an alarming rate, making accessibility more difficult to achieve and maintain. A key takeaway from this year's report is improving accessibility at scale will require both better practices and simpler systems. Alternatively, complex systems need to do a better job of focusing on accessibility fundamentals."

Schau mal, liebe Neurodivergenz-Bubble:

"Über Goblin Tools: Einfache Werkzeuge zur Unterstützung bei alltäglichen Aufgaben

Unsere Mission

"The Death Of The Button: Why The Best Interface Is No Interface"

"The web is evolving beyond menus, forms, and endless clicks toward experiences shaped around human intent. For UX designers, understanding this shift means re-evaluating their role, moving from designing visible interfaces to guiding transparent, intent-driven AI experiences."

Very worth reading!

Example:
"The Death Of The “10-click” Process

To understand where web design is going, we first have to look at the friction we have accepted as “normal” for decades.

Consider the traditional workflow of buying a flight online. The user experience is intentionally hyper-interactive:

  1. Navigate to a travel aggregator or airline website.
  2. Select “Round Trip” from a dropdown menu.
  3. Type the origin city and wait for auto-complete.
  4. Type the destination city and wait for auto-complete.
  5. Click a calendar modal, toggle through months, and select departure and return dates.
  6. Choose the number of passengers and cabin class.
  7. Click “Search” and wait for the results page to load.
  8. Filter by price, layover duration, departure time, and airline.
  9. Sort the results and scan through dozens of individual options.
  10. Click through a three-page checkout funnel dodging upsells for rental cars and travel insurance.

This is a classic point-and-click UI paradigm. The computer acts as a passive container of data, and the human acts as the orchestrator, manually inputting parameters, interpreting raw outputs, and executing each micro-step along the way.

Intent-driven design flips this dynamic entirely. Instead of forcing you to navigate the mechanical steps of how to find a flight, the interface asks a simple question: What are you trying to accomplish?

When you express a goal, such as “Find me a non-stop flight to Chicago next weekend under $300 that arrives before 5 PM”, the software reads your intent, executes the multi-step search query behind the scenes, compares the options, and presents a single actionable resolution. The ten clicks dissolve into one clear intent outcome."

@FuzzyAleks@infosec.exchange Intel and AMD used to do that; I still have the 386 book and chips, plus several AMD manuals on PALs. Intel went even further—at the end of the year, they would donate surplus stock to universities. Our research group's first 8087 was a donation from them; I still have it to this day. 3Com donated a 3C503 card for our first 386BSD 0.1 gateway. Those were the days.

I'm in the tropics; *we reached 40° Celsius today again* We started at 23° Celsius.

This happened the eight time in six weeks.

I'm grateful I learned at a young age to manage & protect my body at temperatures between 15° Celsius and 45° Celsius even though we never reached the latter here.

People need to learn to be grateful and complain less about the weather.
