As you can see here I have composed this photograph with my bike computer clearly removed from its cradle on the race machine

This is from a period where seeing the stats of the ride is very important

It is also from a period when phones only have a yes no GSM and SMS capability

In the period when free bike computers could be run from Android systems, I stopped buying these excellent bike computers because most importantly I did not need to buy multiple copies of these bike computers

I like both versions of this scene from the creek out back, but the crop of a photo can really change the feel of a scene, yeah? I typically like wider crops more, but square crops tend to work better for small screens because you don't have to ask your audience to rotate orientation for proper viewing 😅

Cyanocitta stelleri like to cut off bunches of Sambucus racemosa to eat the berries in private. Not all of them are great at picking ripe bunches 😅

Spider season started early on the Olympic Peninsula this year. Walking into webs every which way I go isn't my favorite thing in the world, but I do love the opportunity to photograph some cool arachnids. This particular spider is Callobius severus. My partner saved her from drowning, and I captured a bazillion photos while she recovered in the sun.

"Image poisoning" with Nightshade - a handy tool for anyone, who publishes photos and graphics of their artworks online.

Description (excerpt):
"Nightshade works similarly as Glaze, but instead of a defense against style mimicry, it is designed as an offense tool to distort feature representations inside generative AI image models. Like Glaze, Nightshade is computed as a multi-objective optimization that minimizes visible changes to the original image. While human eyes see a shaded image that is largely unchanged from the original, the AI model sees a dramatically different composition in the image. For example, human eyes might see a shaded image of a cow in a green field largely unchanged, but an AI model might see a large leather purse lying in the grass. Trained on a sufficient number of shaded images that include a cow, a model will become increasingly convinced cows have nice brown leathery handles and smooth side pockets with a zipper, and perhaps a lovely brand logo.

As with Glaze, Nightshade effects are robust to normal changes one might apply to an image. You can crop it, resample it, compress it, smooth out pixels, or add noise, and the effects of the poison will remain. You can take screenshots, or even photos of an image displayed on a monitor, and the shade effects remain. Again, this is because it is not a watermark or hidden message (steganography), and it is not brittle. (...)"

On August 19th, 2026, people everywhere will take photos of daily life. We will all capture one day on Earth together. This is the birthday of photography, and I want to invite you to join.

The idea is very simple. Just take one photo on August 19th, wherever you are and of whatever you like. You do not need special gear or skills. You can use any camera, including your phone. Everyone can join, whether you are just starting or have been taking photos for years.

After August 19th, you can send your photo on the website. The submission link will be sent after the 19th of August 2026. You will have time to send the image until August 31st. All the photos will be shown together in a big gallery and also in a book. This project is not for profit. The money from the book will go to charity. You will always keep the copyright of your photo."
