#GoToSocial and #littleFedi keep introducing thoughtful functionality focused on user choice and user empowerment and I'm here for it!

GoToSocial supports importing from previous instance even provides an API for importing non ActivityPub history but both require external tools. littleFedi has built-in backup and full instance restore that seems to be aiming for lower tech know-how. #OwnYourData indeed, hear hear 🍻

Stefano Marinelli - littleFedi @stefano

@shom @fasnix @madamada Built-in backups of the database, the configuration and, optionally, local owned media, with a manifest and a restore command.

You can fully export all your contents (including posts) and re-import them into another littleFedi instance. It'll be another account with another handle, but you won't lose any of your contents. Your data stays yours.

@shom I hadn't heard of littlefedi. I registered a domain today, I think I'm going to rent a Pi off of mythic beasts and host on that.

@shom I like the look of littlefedi, but no code, no deal for me. I'll stick to my gotosocial plan

@tmcfarlane@toot.community they're working towards a MIT license release. Given the driver behind it, Stefano, I am comfortable with it landing soon. I will not host it unless it's open source.

@shom gotosocial looks fine for my needs. Apparently switching implementations on a domain can be problematic (how the fuck activitypub achieved that exactly I have no idea), so I need to play around a bit before I commit to anything.

@tmcfarlane@toot.community GoToSocial is great, I'm very happy with it and totally recommend it.

Re: keys. Yeah it's a mess. Technically you can extract the keys from the old instance and inject them into the new instance... but come on!

I would HIGHLY recommend putting any fedi application on a subdomain instead of the top level domain. Then worst case you can abandon the subdomain and still keep your TLD and try again with another subdomain.

Happy to chat more about my experience as you poke around with GoToSocial.

@shom cheers. I was intending ysing a subdomain anyway.
