@stefano I'm doing weird things to find the edges. Here's one. If I take a quote post and then turn it into a blog two observations:

  • The first line is treated as the blog title, which in this case was just one line and it got cut off. This makes sense for how blogging needs to work but an observation.
  • The blog post retains no connection to the original post being quoted. While there are a lot of considerations around embedding any of that content, I do think it should post a link to the original post in the blog as a top level metadata type field. What do you think?

@fedops@fosstodon.org thanks I suspect it's how GtS handles it that works for Phanpy when coming from Mastodon but not from littleFedi.

@kasperd@westergaard.social absolutely!
It's as if algorithms by themselves aren't bad but malintent, opaqueness, and blaming algorithms as a way to disavow responsibility is!

@stefano @fiend_unpleasant very unfortunate indeed. I don't think the tech Bros have copted the magic wand yet 🪄 (not making suggestions by the way, I'm sure there are much better icons)

@fiend_unpleasant @stefano fantastic indeed!
Unfortunately ✨ icon is tainted, I was going to provide feedback around that too. The pin icon also took me a little bit to figure out, kinda looked like a 🌲 and something else 😬

Algorithm is math not magic

Wonderful example of how to surface information to an user while respecting their privacy, with transparency, and still providing a self-curated experience.

Edit: what happens if I turn a quote post into a blog? Also, did it spam everyone with a notification of an edit? (Sorry, but testing account gotta be testing)

@fiend_unpleasant no AI features here. Good old deterministic computing.
It's a simple algo that will consider the people you follow. At the end of the page, there's a complete explanation:

Why am I seeing these posts?
Each post scores on signals this instance already holds, and the score halves as the post ages. Nothing is fetched from anywhere else, and nothing learns from what you open:

+2.5
per account you follow who boosted it
+1.0
× log of the favourites seen from here
+0.8
× log of the boosts seen from here
+0.6
× log of the replies seen from here
+1.2
you favourited, boosted or replied to this author in the last month
+1.0
carries a hashtag you follow
+0.8
continues a conversation you took part in
-1.0
the post is a reply
12h
the score halves for every this many hours since the post reached your feed
Your own posts, and anything you already favourited, bookmarked, boosted or replied to, are left out. At most two posts per author. Twenty entries, then the page ends: there is nothing more to scroll.

Your blocks, mutes and filters apply exactly as on every other timeline.

Seriously! I mostly use web based tools for my job but everything is just sucking ans bloated and slow. I'm going to jump through all the hoops to get WSL and see how much of my work life I can move into that terminal. I wish I could just use Linux or a Linux VM.

shom @shom@gts.shom.dev

I restart my work Windows 11 laptop and launch MS Teams and a terminal: 11.2 GB of RAM is in use.
11.2 GB
Apparently the 11 in Windows 11 stands for 11 GB!

Are you freaking kidding me!? Teams is using "only" 1 GB.

I.
Can't.
Even.

Photo post test. Looks like it strips all metadata including alt-text?
Alt-text intentionally left blank, sorry. Here's what it should read:

A sunset scene at Baker Beach by the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fransisco, CA, USA. The sun is setting off screen to the left and casting a beautiful light sideways towards the subjects which is further scattered by the spray in the air. A wave is crashing in from the left with white foamy water rushing onto the sand and covering most of the bottom third, beyond which are the rocks that have caused a huge splash of brilliant white spray just in front of a couple that is standing front to back on some rocks hugging framed in between to two towers of the Golden Gate Bridge in the background which stands under a blue sky with scattered fluffy clouds. @stefano this is a low-impact issue but noting for sake of completeness.
With markdown enabled the starting `#` is treated correctly as a header but it also tags the post with an empty tag: https://littleone.littlefedi.social/@shom/blog/tags/

The threaded replies on the blog interface looks great. The built in blogging and commenting functionality is really nicely conceived, awesome work!

@stefano I'm not seeing the option while editing but I was able to make a new blog post (this one).

Currently converting an existing post to a blog post doesn't seem to be supported. Is that right @stefano or am I doing something wrong?

Blogging via micro-blogging

Blogging and maintaining a separate social feed is difficult. My primary interest is to be able to do it all in one platform and also convert existing posts into blog posts if they need to be persisted as a "body of work".

Current state

Currently, I end up copying and pasting that into a blog post, but that's a bit of friction.

Desired state

The idea is that if you end up writing a series of posts and it becomes something that is more meaty and has some value for longevity it can be persisted by simply changing the post type to a blog, after the fact.

Rationale

it's cognitively easier to write a series of posts instead of sitting down to write a blog post.

I want to test a threaded post which can then be converted to a blog post. This is the first one.
