I've been heavily poking at littleFedi by @stefano and quite excited about it.

I wrote about it in another Blaugust attempt: Big hopes for littleFedi. Also available on my test account @shom@littleone.littlefedi.social's post/blog.

@shom @shom@gts.shom.dev Ha! I think you're a way better test subject than I am, since I haven't even tried to play with the blog feature yet.

Yes, LittleFedi is probably the biggest thing happening in cyberspace in a long time.
Kudos to @stefano and the team for making it happening.
This is really power to the people.
I haven't been so excited by a software in a long time.
When I "met" Stefano online for the first time I immediately commented that this reminded me of FidoNet, a communication system that could be set up by anybody, and it turns out he was involved in that as well.
I think those days marked us forever and I must congratulate him for bringing that spirit back to the internet.

@francois @shom@gts.shom.dev Thank you.
For me, that spirit never faded. The modem's noise was a gateway to something magical, a doorway to a different world.
Things didn't evolve in the way I was hoping, but we can do something to recreate that passion, that idea, that feeling.
We have the tools. We just need the mood.

@francois @stefano I got my first computer after the FidoNet days but the modem was singing songs of handwritten HTML with red text on background, marquees, and under constructions gifs! We need digital spaces that feel like our own. Where we can decorate, be weird, and connect with other weirdos like us easily. It needs to be about self-expression and connection, the technology needs to enable it while being invisible. That's the promise of the Fediverse and #littleFedi is moving that forward and making it even more accessible 💛

*weird = interesting and cool and used lovingly to refer to my people.

@francois I think Tom from MySpace is actually talking about doing just that 😂
I really hope he does so with ActivityPub, that name recognition could do wonders for people discovering fedi.

Interesting post, I am looking to self-host next too, and my provider has a good guide to GoToSocial installs.
So any thoughts on that welcome Shom.

First I have to get the new place sorted though, I am apt to take on too much at once 😀

@mbt3d congrats you did it, the move is done! Gotta do some fun procrastination right! unpacking can wait!

I really like GoToSocial. The devs are building it very thoughtfully. I have no plans of moving this instance away from GoToSocial (and not just because the subdomain is gts 😂). GtS Self-hosting is fairly straightforward especially if your host has it configured already. I would absolutely recommend it. Also littleFedi isn't self-hostable yet but based on what I know of the design it will be very straightforward.

So depending upon when you get around to it, it may be an option as well. It's still bleeding edge and I expect cuts but I'm happy to be a test subject. I started running GtS when it was much farther along but it's still under active development. That's part of the fun too to look forward to new functionality, etc.

One piece of advice I would give is to install any fedi server in a subdomain (e.g. gts.shom.dev) instead of the top level domain (e.g. shom.dev). Because of how ActivityPub federation and identity keys are handled if you mess up your server and aren't able to restore those exact keys that domain will forever suffer federation problems. So doing it in a subdomain is a bit of an insurance policy where you might lose that sub-domain for hosting fedi but you don't have to abandon your whole domain.

Sorry for the info dump happy to chat more as you explore!
