a week in the lake district (test blog post)
The Lake District National Park has been one of my happy places for a good number of years, here are some highlights from my recent visit.
pencil museum
The pencil museum is a must do. I’ve been telling the family this for many years, but until this week we haven’t managed to visit.
The general consensus is that it was more interesting than predicted. When you arrive you receive a pencil as your ticket to the museum and a quiz sheet with promises of prizes for correct answers.
Random (pencil based) facts I learned:
- The pencil was invented in Borrowdale in the lakes, one of those accidental discoveries, mainly as the graphite wouldn’t burn but did leave marks on things.
- Pencils never had lead in them. It was the name used to describe the writing bit because it looked like lead - it has always been graphite.
- The term ‘black market’ comes from a time graphite was more valuable than gold and was often liberated by smugglers. Unfortunately, you were easily identified by your black, graphite stained, hands.
Our prize for completing the quiz? More pencils!
wansfell pike
I much prefer walks we can start from our accommodation, makes for a car free day. This 6 mile walk took us up past Stockghyll Force waterfall, up to Wansfell Pike, back down via Hundreds Lane and back home through Skelghyll Wood. Lots of different scenery, and no wind. Lots of lambs.
dove cottage
The home of William Wordsworth from 1799 to 1808. Not a big poetry fan, but it was very interesting to see how things changed in the period and how people lived in the area. Wordsworth absolutely nailed the weather…
The rain here comes down heartily.

The ticket lasts for a year so plan to return to explore more, especially the gardens and local woodland when the weather is more pleasant.
borrowdale
Possibly one of my favourite places to walk, plenty of different views and terrain, takes in part of the Cumbria way and an excellent lunch spot by the river where you may spot Kingfisher. Below is a view from the walk, on the Cumbria Way alongside Castle Crag - Derwent Water in far distance.
The route is about 4.5 miles long, suitable for all and I think gives a really good impression of the Lake District, link to the route below.
Top tip: the flock inn cafe towards the end of the walk is worth a stop for the Borrowdale tea loaf - and if you are there at the right time of year there will be oodles of lambs in the neighbouring fields.
one final thing
We found that the Apple weather app was notoriously wrong most of the time, much better was the met office app - it can be found on both Apple and android app stores.
@pepdmin I guess we bought into the idea that it would all be available forever and stored elsewhere... how wrong we were. 🫤
New littleFedi build on littleOne
littleFedi 26.08.09 - the changes in this build compared with the previous
deployment.
Followed hashtags in the main navigation
Your followed hashtags are now one click away: a Hashtags entry (with a
hashtag icon) has been added to the desktop navigation bar and the mobile
account menu, pointing at /tags. The label is translated in every supported
language.
Blog posts show a link back to their permalink
Posts that have been published to the blog now carry a small Blog chip in
the status meta line. It links to the post's readable permalink
(/@user/blog/<slug>/) and works on timestamps and boosts, so readers can jump
straight from the timeline to the polished blog version of a long post.
Status meta line reworked
Every marker on a status - visibility, language, blog chip, expiry - is now
rendered as the same uniform chip in a single wrapping flex row, instead of a
mix of right-aligned inline boxes. Posts that carry several markers read as one
neat line rather than a ragged stack. The Ink and Roost themes were adjusted to
match.
Robustness: orphaned-account posts no longer break the page
Previously a post whose author account no longer resolves (a purged account, or
a partially hydrated cache entry) could fail the whole timeline render. Now any
status - including the target of a boost - whose author is missing is silently
skipped. Covered by a new test.
Icon updates
- Catch-up view and its navigation entries now use a VHS icon instead of the
old sparkle (thank you for the suggestion, @shom@littleone.littlefedi.social ). - The "redraft" action gets a proper undo icon.
- The Appearance and Blog appearance settings sections get a palette
icon. - New hashtag icon for the navigation.
Blog theming fixes
- Proper spacing restored for non-paragraph content in the post body: headings,
bullet/numbered lists, horizontal rules and code blocks now breathe instead of
collapsing against each other. - A post with a single attachment now renders a full-width figure (the old
grid left a small thumbnail stranded at the left edge). - The "View or reply in the Fediverse" link is now consistently styled.
- Ledger theme: long code lines scroll inside their block instead of
breaking out past the reading measure. - Marginalia theme: the thread link, replies and pager now align to the text
column on wide screens, and print output was cleaned up.
If you publish a blog, regenerate it so the fixes apply: Settings → Blog
appearance → Rebuild blog now. The blog's style.css is assembled at build
time, so it only picks up these changes when you rebuild.
The joys of getting rid of streaming services and getting back into actually owning your own music, movies, shows and games... apart from issues with space running out are definitely sourcing second hand copies of your favorite albums. Don't know why I ever thought that leasing EVERYTHING was a great idea in the first place.
To say I am excited about #LittleFedi software would be an understatement. What I am seeing from @stefano and the team breaks new barriers for entering in, and participating in, the #Fediverse. Can't wait to test on a self hosted Pi at home. If successful, I shall migrate my long established Mastodon cloud instance to it and serve all from home on local hardware.
I'm very much interested in "constructed languages".
Beside being able to understand Esperanto, I learned about "Lingwa de Planeta (Lidepla)" only last year.
Lidepla is constructed out of the 10-12 most spoken languges of the world, what makes it more international than Esperanto does.
Here are some example sentences:
"Some phrases will almost seem to be Russian:
Yu snova dumai om sey nove filma.
You think about this new film again.
Some phrases may consist almost solely of Chinese words:
Ta shwo ke ta bu yao chi yan, ta yao nangwa.
He says that he does not want to eat mutton, he wants pumpkin.
Some may consist of Hindi words:

And some are of Arabic ones:

I'm finding myself visiting #littlefedi more and more - more than my own #mastodon-instance. I really like that it doesn't look like the #birdsite at all and does try something new just on a visual level. Really looking forward to selhosting this piece of amazing community-software. <3

The workaround is of course to reply to the message and cut and paste the url from the browser, but I'm lazy. It does work tho.

For me, that spirit never faded. The modem's noise was a gateway to something magical, a doorway to a different world.
Things didn't evolve in the way I was hoping, but we can do something to recreate that passion, that idea, that feeling.
We have the tools. We just need the mood.

feature request: One thing that would be nice to have is the address of a post if you want to boost it from an account not following.
Not sure it makes sense, so the use case is this:
I follow xxx@littleOne on littleOne but I also have an account at zzz@mastodon and I read a post from aaa@littleOne which would be relevant in the zzz@mastodon context. So I get the url, and boost it from zzz@mastodon.
